Bodywork at InnerWorks

What Conditions Can Bodywork Treat?

Bodywork excels at problems which involve pain and organ system dysfunction or symptoms. The musculoskeletal, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine, cranial sacral and circulatory systems of the body are crucial in promoting health and wellbeing as well as healing disease and bodywork has the potential to greatly improve the functioning of these systems.

What Will My First Bodywork Session Be Like?

A discussion with your practitioner regarding your health history, current health issues, stress levels, tools utilized for dealing with stress, and any other factors that you feel are contributing factors to your health and wellness concerns will help determine the most beneficial treatment plan. Depending on the modality, you will be treated usually lying down and fully clothed. Most treatments last approximately an hour and usually include work on your area of concern as well as your body in general. You will find bodywork extremely relaxing, rewarding and beneficial.

History of Bodywork

Bodywork is one of the oldest forms of medicine. It is based on the idea that tension in and through the different systems in the body may cause and/or contribute to physical, emotional, and mental internal imbalances. The techniques are focused on reducing tension within the body and body systems and improving the structure and function to facilitate the free flow of blood, fluids, and energy. When this flow of blood and energy has improved, the major systems of the body (immune, circulatory, endocrine, lymphatic, musculoskeletal, nervous, etc.) will be better able to naturally heal disease and to promote health and well-being. Bodywork also facilitates the release of body held trauma. The client remains fully clothed for most bodywork therapies. We include Reiki and Therapeutic Touch energy work therapies in this section. Massage Therapy is listed separately.

Types of Bodywork Practiced at InnerWorks:

There are many styles of bodywork practiced today. Below are listed those that are available for you at InnerWorks; click on the links to the right for more detailed information.

Acupressure

Acupressure is one of many forms of massage that come from the "east" and are based in varying degrees on the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupressure simply means to stimulate the acupuncture points of the body by using your hands, thumbs a/or other parts of your body. At InnerWorks, we use a technique developed by Dr. Aminah Raheem and taught by Soul Lightening International. It uses curved finger "fulcrums" to gently apply pressure to acupuncture points. This interface touch plus the location of the majority of the points on the extraordinary meridians make this form unique.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating the membranes and biorhythms of the cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord and improve the functioning of the central nervous system. It is effective for health problems associated with migraine and other headaches, TMJ, brain and spinal cord injuries, chronic pain conditions, post-traumatic stress disorder, some learning disabilities, stress and tension-related problems, and body held trauma.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic Drainage (LDT) is a subtle hands-on system of maneuvers to assess the lymphatic system and simulate wave-like movements to activate fluid systems in the body. The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to our body's ability to detoxify, regenerate tissues, stimulate the immune system and prevent an unhealthy accumulation of excess body fluids due to surgery, poor circulation, sprains, etc. It is an excellent adjunctive therapy for post-mastectomy, lumpectomy or other invasive surgeries that result in lymphedema or generalized swelling.

Reiki

Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means "Universal Life" and (Ki) which means "Energy". It is a subtle and effective form of energy healing using spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating a healing environment for itself. Reiki is a wonderful complement to traditional medicine as it is holistic in nature and will not interfere with any drug, diagnosis or belief system. Reiki works toward long-term improvement by helping people address, heal and release issues that lead to their problem. Reiki gives the power to heal to the recipient themselves.

Seva Stress Release Acupressure

Seva Stress Release utilizes the same therapeutic principles as acupuncture to specifically ease the human stress response and support overall well-being. The specific acu-points used in the Seva Stress Release were chosen carefully for their multi-functional properties. Each point is accessed with a special style of touch, and in a particular order to facilitate an optimal deep, relaxing experience. The Chinese healing traditions make no distinction between the body, mind, and spirit. When one system is addressed, all the others are affected as well. This is why we say that the Seva Stress Release is a "whole-being" approach.

SomatoEmotional Release

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) facilitates the release of body held emotion. This held emotional energy can disrupt the healthy flow of energy in the body. The energy used to contain this held emotion robs us of energy which could be used for fully embracing our lives. The body sometimes holds on to the pain not allowing us to move forward and fully heal from old painful events, locking in the emotions and belief systems from the time of the injury so deeply in the body that we can't get to them to work on and release them.

SomatoEmotional Release Information

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a gentle nursing procedure that uses the hands with intention to promote relaxation and comfort. Touch may or may not be used as this process primarily helps restore balance within an individual at a subtle energetic level. A deep state of relaxation which is deeply calming and centering is often experienced by the recipient.

Zero Balancing

Zero Balancing (ZB) is a hands-on body/mind system designed to align body energy with the body's physical structure; it represents the integration of Eastern views of energy with Western views of science. ZB helps to release deeply held tension that develops from chronic stress and pain by establishing a therapeutic state of relaxation. ZB relieves pain and promotes clarity that can aid one's decision making process and help establish new, productive patterns of behavior and assists with integration and transformation required in the healing of illness and trauma.
